Leicester admit Riyad Mahrez has been unsettled by Gunners’ interest
King Claudio has admitted that his star winger is not dealing with the the ongoing speculation over his future very well.
The Algerian international has been chased by Wenger throughout the summer, and despite his team mates brushing off the attention, it’s now clear that Arsenal’s overtures are having the desired effect.
Speaking after his sides 4-0 defeat to PSG, Ranieri admitted: “Maybe Riyad is distracted a bit by all of these rumours and speculation, buut that is also an experience for my players.
“It is important that he understands that he should stay with us.
“He has to improve his fitness and play for the team as well last season.”
Vardy on Riyad Mahrez, and why he snubbed Arsenal
The boy Jamie Vardy turned down a move to Arsenal earlier this summer, and has told Sky Sports News that he opted to stay at Leicester because he thinks there is ‘unfinished business’ with the Champions:
“It’s not been put out there that I have always said the boys, the close-knit brotherhood, is unbelievable and for me, there’s a lot of unfinished business here,” he said.
“I feel that the club is only going one way and that is forward, that’s why I want to be a part of it.
“It wasn’t that big [the decision] when I think about it. It was quite easy and this is where I want to be.”
On Arsenal’s rumoured interest in Riyad Mahrez, Vardy sais:
“I think everyone in the squad would want him here, playing with us, but that’s nothing to do with us and it’s down to Riyad and the club to sort out.”
Defender coming, but prices are crazy
Here’s our own John Percy reporting that a defender will be joining, but that Arsene Wenger is concerned about transfer fees at the moment:
Arsene Wenger will step up his search for a new centre-half after confirming Arsenal “heavyweight” Per Mertesacker will miss the rest of the year. Mertesacker has been ruled out for several months with a knee injury and Wenger has revealed he will sign a replacement, with targets including Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
Wenger is already under pressure from Arsenal supporters to recruit a striker yet he was in defiant mood in Los Angeles on Saturday, attacking the “completely crazy” prices being spent on players this summer.
Alexandre Lacazette, the Lyon forward, is another target with Arsenal preparing an improved offer after their opening bid of £29.3million was rejected.
